Project Information
What is this Project about

Internet-based services are growing in spread and quality, but a user centred approach where the final user can use different functionality, easily, at the same time with logical co-ordination among them is still far to be realised. Nowadays most of the functionality (chat, audio-video conference, A/V streaming, directories, navigation in 3D worlds) are provided either separately by individual applications or rigidly bundled in proprietary solutions. In the first case the user has the burden of configuring and manually co-ordinating a number of possibly conflicting pieces of software. In the other case the "solution" is generally much more expensive for the user and /or for the service provider and hardly "unbundable" or customisable for different classes of users.

Objectives

The main objective of this Project is to enhance operator capability to select and integrate third party commercial software components and services to offer customised interactive multimedia service (functionality) bundles to different classes of Internet/Intranet users.

What are the key results of this Project?
The Project will cover the following items:

  • Selection of Internet Middleware: an incremental construction of a "library" of service components selected among commercial (or nearly commercial) offers suitable to further integration in specific bundles. Examples of functionality for which components can be selected on the market are registration, accounting, communication (mail, chat, audio, video), application or specific items sharing (WEB pages, 3D world, games), media pushing, data processing, security, etc.
  • Integration models and methodologies: Selection/development of practical approaches to represent available products as integratable components and to represent their composition in the final service bundles for the end users.
  • Wrapping Techniques: techniques and tools, which simplify the interfacing to commercial components or enhance their integrability according to a specific integration model or a specific componentware platform.
  • End user integration tools: tools used by operator personnel or directly provided to the customer to search for available components and compose them according to the specific user needs.
  • Service Trials in the area of Virtual Communities
