What is this Project about

The market of collaborative telecommunication applications has been continuously growing during the last decade. The most important applications, currently, have been audio/graphic and videoconferencing, but it is expected that new technology and network development will generalise multimedia information on the Internet as well as collaborative systems.

Till now it is not clear what the requirements, architecture and technology of such collaborative applications will be. Questions like the following should be answered:

  • Among the emerging technologies, which ones are likely to impact existing or future collaborative applications? What is the maturity in both terms of functionality and performances of this technology?
  • How will existing collaborative applications be impacted by this technology? What are the collaborative applications that can benefit from the new technology and the Web paradigm (market demand, suitability of the available bit rate...)?
  • What are the new collaborative applications that can be developed based on the emerging technologies?
  • How can new technology improve collaborative applications in order to support usual human conference behaviour sharing a common environment and expressing their interest in communications in a way they are used to?
  • How can new technology improve the adaptation of collaborative applications to the various end user terminals and to hostile network environments?
  • Does 3-D audio and video technology provide more comfortable and intuitive user interfaces for collaborative applications?

What are the main objectives of this Project?

The challenging objective of this project proposal is to provide exhaustive answers to the above mentioned points.

The path selected by the project in order to achieve its results is:

  • Thorough survey, test and evaluation of relevant technology. Theoretical studies of the impact of this technology on existing and future collaborative applications.
  • Definition and specification of a set of promising applications. Proposal of a service architecture and the technology for its integration.
  • Realisation of real-time mock-up for some of these applications.

What are the key results of this Project?

  • The specification of an innovative (i.e. based on the emerging technology) collaborative applications architecture in Internet environments.
  • Identification and specification of a set of innovative collaborative applications and development of the architecture that will support these applications.
  • Real-time demonstration of some innovative collaborative applications
  • Forecast and impact on standards, end-systems design and network infrastructure
