What is this Project about?

Traditional network accesses including fixed and mobile telephony, leased lines and data, are heading towards saturation, but at the same time, new technology enables extended access to many kinds of new devices and objects in sensor networks. These objects include appliances, personal objects, vehicles and even living beings, and have previously not been thought of as communicating entities. What are the roles for Telcos in this market, and how can Telcos take advantage of their position as traditional network access suppliers? What possible business models and strategies can TelCos use when entering this market?

What are the main objectives of this Project?

The project has the following main objectives:

  • To identify the most important Telco advantages, both in terms of business and technology aspects

  • to identify Telco’s roles and to outline a possible business model and strategies on how Telcos should approach the fast growing market of sensor networks and applications of sensor networks.

In order to achieve the main objectives the following must be addressed:

  • Identify and describe the main technological trends towards network devices and accesses.

  • Identify the capabilities of these new devices

  • Exemplify what services can be provided that will appeal to the different classes of users.

  • Investigate and describe what Telcos are doing today in this area.

  • Describe the value chain, different roles and the main actors. Identify competitors that possibly hold any of the roles today, and describe how we can interact with such actors in a natural way.

  • Identify strong Telco advantages and how we can strengthen these in order to improve our market shares.

  • Outline an approach to a strategy and related business models.

What are the key results of this project?

The sensor network and m2m domain is a growing market segment with tremendous potential. The results from the study will be general knowledge and strategic input on how Telcos can approach this segment. These results can be further processed by each shareholder and used as input to individual strategy and business modelling processes.
