is this Project about?
As demonstrated by the EURESCOM P1145 project, the time is in to form a vision for systems beyond 3G (B3G). Activities towards B3G are so far technology-driven, where the TelCos remain on the sideline, being able to watch, but not to contribute. This study will ensure that EURESCOM and the shareholders are active players in the development and standardisation of systems beyond 3G. The study will concentrate on forming a common opinion on strategic issues for B3G, and include the user- and operator requirements to balance the technology-driven approach.
What are the main objectives of this Project?
The study will collect inputs from the ongoing activities at EURESCOM and other fora. The study members will actively contribute to the relevant bodies and publish the vision to ensure that a future system includes operators requirements. The study will also include evaluation of the business potential of mobile networks beyond 3G, including technical and economical benefits of integrating various access technologies in a common platform.
In particular, the study will make efforts to establish B3G studies in the EU's 6th Framework Programme, and ensure that the operators requirements are encountered in this context.
What are the key results for this Project?
The results will be used for developing strategies as well as for planning of further R&D on the issues. In particular, the results will be fed into the preparation of the EU Framework Programme 6, with the intention of establishing a larger project in this organisation. What relationship exists to other organisations or bodies? Results from this study will be used for submission e.g. to the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF).
