What is this Project about?

In spite of the phenomenal growth of Internet/Intranet based services the performance characteristics of large-scale networks are still rather poorly understood. Mostly there is only rather narrow empirical evidence for the network performance limited to static topologies and time-invariant network parameters. Quantitative models that take into consideration dynamic network topologies and a large variety of traffic patterns and statistics are still lacking.

What are the main objectives of this Project?

  • Generate a methodological framework for analysing the performance of Web based services over the Internet/Intranets
  • Identify the set of all variables which impact on network performance and understand the statistics of them
  • Understand in more detail and by the use of quantitative models, wherever possible, how the overall performance of the network depends on the interrelationship between the performance variables
  • Derive from the quantitative and simulation analysis practical design methods for the dimensioning of IP networks.
  • Produce early on in the project a simple model which will be modified and improved as the project progresses
  • Validate simulation output against traffic measurement data.
  • Keep track of traffic data and evolution within other related activities like IST Ipv6 and US Abilene network

What are the key results of this Project?

  • A quantitative model of the performance of dynamic network topologies under varying traffic demand.
  • Methods usable for the design and dimensioning of networks.
  • Methods which cut down on development work and provide efficient solution without having to go through extensive design trials each time.

What relationship exists to other organisations or bodies?

Related international research activities will be followed. Information publicly available on the traffic evolution in advanced networks, such as the IST Ipv6 and US Abilene networks will be used.
