P924    Deployment and Configuration Support for distributed PNO Applications

D4 Evaluation Results, Achievements and Project Conclusions
Issue date: July 2001
Confidentiality: For full publication
Format: 1 Volume (60 pages)

Distribution and configuration support is concerned with the transition and mapping from the Computational to the Engineering viewpoint during the last phases of service creation. It also addresses the deployment of software components onto service nodes, static configuration, and the relevant distribution and configuration aspects in the service usage phase. The latter involves DPE mechanisms that provide functionality that enables distribution transparencies and dynamic configuration. Dynamic configuration includes the runtime configuration and management of service components and aspects related to, for instance, QoS, distribution of the distributed objects of the service, and the way these objects utilise the DPE.

This document presents a process model and guidelines for the initial and the dynamic configuration of distributed applications and puts the subject of distribution and configuration into the overall service creation, deployment, and usage context. It is a step towards the methodological aspects of bridging the gap between component specification and their actual configuration and distribution in terms of software components on middleware platforms. Concepts and methods for both static and dynamic configuration are taken into consideration. The document identifies use-cases of the various actors involved and provides requirements for related distribution and configuration support tools and applications.

Applicability: All entities, which are interested in methods for deployment of software components in heterogeneous CORBA environments like PNOs, Service Providers, Users, Tool Vendors.
