P918    Integration of IP over Optical Networks: Networking and Management

D5 Survivability Strategies with Interactions between Layer Networks
Issue date: January  2001
Confidentiality: for full publication
Format: 1 Volume ( 43 pages)
Overview:

This last deliverable of EURESCOM Project P918 reviews survivability strategies with
interaction between Layer Networks.

First, an overview of the requirements for network survivability in multi-layer networks is provided.
After reviewing the single layer network survivability mechanisms the deliverable goes on to discuss
integrated network survivability strategies in multi-layer networks and looks at how they could be
applied to the selected architectures, IP/POS/WDM, IP/DPT/WDM and IP/GbE/WDM.
The impact of MPLS on the network survivability is also discussed. Finally, some guidelines are provided
regarding how to co-ordinate survivability mechanisms across layers through OAM signalling and
management actions.

Applicability:

This deliverable is valuable to Network Operators deploying or having deployed multi-layer networks.

The results presented in this deliverable are of interest to network planners and network management
designers, manufacturers of equipment and management systems, experts involved in standardisation.
