P1006    Differentiated Services - Network Configuration and Management (DISCMAN)

TI11 An Alternative View on Differentiated Services
Issue date: June  2001
Confidentiality: for full publication
Format: 1 volume (8 pages)
Abstract:

As the Internet evolves, the advent of new multimedia services has brought the topic of Quality of Service (QoS) to the attention of the international networking community. The current favoured architecture for providing a range of QoS services is the Differentiated Services (Diff-serv) architecture due to its simplistic approach. This paper presents preliminary results from a study into the possibility of providing a range of perceivably different QoS classes based on the Diff-serv architecture. These initial preliminary results show that due to TCP's rapid transition, more than two QoS classes may perturb a user's perception of performance. Further investigation is needed to verify these initial results with more realistic operating conditions.

Applicability: Targeted readers: Network planners and operators considering the introduction of Differentiated Services in their IP networks, research and standardisation bodies, and system manufacturers involved in the development od Differentiated Services supporting equipment.
