Project Information

What is this Project about?

The impact on climate changes of Green House Gases (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere and its direct relationship with energy production and usage, has made energy efficiency a paramount issue on the social and political agenda.

In 2008, the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), an ICT industry-led initiative committed to promoting technologies and practices that foster economic, environmental and social sustainability, produced the “SMART 2020 – Enabling the Low Carbon Economy in the Information Age” report, where ICT and telecommunications potential to induce energy savings and carbon emissions reduction was revealed, while driving economic growth and productivity. The report quantified the global footprint of the ICT sector in 2020 at around 2.7% of global emissions, but also its potential for to enable about 15% decrease in CO2 emissions in other areas of the economy, by means of ICT-enabled initiatives in five key areas: electric grids, buildings, logistics, motors and dematerialisation.

In March 2009, European Commission (EU) has launched a public consultation in the 27 Member States, asking for new ideas on how to stimulate the use of ICTs to achieve better energy efficiency. The results were published in September 2009 and a Commission Recommendation was published on month later, recommending a set of actions to be taken by Member States and by the ICT sector for the improvement of energy efficiency and energy consumption reduction.

In face of the raise in energy costs and environmental impacts GHG emissions, a significant number of business opportunities for telecom operators are worthwhile to investigate, offering innovative services and value propositions in key economic areas, reinforcing their social responsibility and environmental reputation.

What are the main objectives of this Project?

The Study aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • To identify the main economy sectors where the use of new telecommunications based services and applications would lead to significant energy efficiency gains

  • To characterize telecommunications and ICT added value in the sector’s value chain (from the energy dependency perspective), and telecom operators value proposition

  • To produce a set of recommendations on how telecom operators can contribute to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint in the previously identified sectors, by providing new telecommunications based services and applications

  • To outline the business models that could support each business case per economic sector
