What is this Project about?

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an interesting means of storing and retrieving data through electromagnetic transmission to a RF compatible tag, and is now being seen as a radical means of enhancing data handling processes. The actual interest on RFID is caused by the supply chain management. In this domain up to now the use of RFID was limited to bigger volumes like containers or pallets, but the ongoing advances in microelectronics let very soon expect tag prices of under 10 cent at very high numbers and therefore enable the use on or in single products, even in low cost products for the daily life.

Since the small storage capacity of about 64 to 128 bit is mainly used for identification, all data correlated to the product must be stored and processed in the network, whereby - depending on the application - different services are necessary. The technology must be used comprehensively among different actors and companies and therefore it could be a charming task for telecom operators and service providers to deliver and operate backend infrastructure and services for RFID applications in the future. Then, when most articles and every thing carry RFID tags, a lot of applications at the home or in enterprises are possible and imaginable. But also active RFID technologies or passive technologies with better storage capacity can offer new possibilities for Telcos.

Up to now telecommunication processes are triggered by persons, computers or highly sophisticated devices. With the use of low-cost RFID every simple object can trigger telecommunication processes and therefore this technology has the potential to modify the landscape of telecommunications.

What are the main objectives of this Project?

  • Give an overview of the state of the art, standardisation and market situation of RFID
  • Point out the possibilities, applications and capabilities of RFID technologies
  • Identify roles for comprehensive, cross-enterprise services based on RFID technology
  • Identify core, backend and infrastructure services, which can be delivered by Telcos or telecom service providers.
  • Show direct, secondary and induced business possibilities
  • Identify services and value added service of Telcos which could be improved or new defined utilizing RFID
  • Identify internal processes and procedures which could be improved or developed by the means of RFID

What are the key results for this Project?

This study will promote the subject “RFID” at Telcos and bring more detailed information concerning the evaluation of the technology and its market potential . From the results of the study telecom operators and service providers should be able to derive new services and applications with new business possibilities. The operator should be able to identify new customers or new customer groups. Further he should get some ideas how this technology can contribute to reinforce relationships with the existing customers.
